Conservative Treatment
Many patients improve without surgery. Non-surgical treatments may include a short period of rest, oral medications, chiropractic, physical therapy, exercise, or epidural steroid injection therapy. Additional therapies such as ultrasound, electric stimulation, hot packs, cold packs, and manual ("hands on") therapy may be prescribed to reduce your pain and muscle spasm, which will make it easier to start an exercise program. Traction may also provide pain relief for some patients. Bracing, such as a lumbar corset, may help relieve your back pain.
